Invisalign Q & A
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign, an FDA-approved orthodontic treatment used under a doctor’s care, is a type of clear braces. The treatment process involves wearing customized sets of clear aligners as an alternative to brackets and wires.
During Invisalign treatment, a series of aligners gently shift teeth into proper alignment. Because the doctor maps the exact movements of your teeth with a state-of-the-art digital platform, we are able to create a customized Invisalign treatment plan that’s best suited for your needs. You can even see a digital movie of what your teeth will look like from start to finish.
Every one to two weeks, you switch to a new set of aligners, which continue correcting your teeth and bite imperfections by applying the right amount of force. Invisalign aligners are thin, clear, and snug-fitting, making them virtually invisible.
If you have more complex misalignment issues, the doctor may suggest Invisalign’s SmartForce® attachments. These tooth-colored bump-like structures are bonded to certain teeth to allow for more precise tooth movements. Attachments are removed when treatment is complete.
Do I need to wear Invisalign aligners all day?
To keep your treatment plan on track, it’s important to wear Invisalign aligners for 20-22 hours per day.
Of course, we understand there are times when you must remove your aligners. It’s acceptable to remove your Invisalign aligners to:
- Brush and floss your teeth
- Eat your meals and snacks
- Drink beverages other than water
Because you don’t want decay-causing bacteria to get trapped in your aligners, it’s helpful to get in the habit of brushing your teeth after eating and drinking.
